Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz reported that the situation began early that Tuesday morning when two men knocked on the front door of the residence.

Homeowner Ben Bates explained that his daughter answered the door, believing the men were at the wrong house due to their holding a DoorDash bag.

“As soon as she opened the door, he pulled a gun out of a DoorDash bag, and he forced entry,” Bates said.

The intruders tied up Bates’s daughter in front of her two small children. “They zip-tied my daughter and she had her 1-year-old and 3-year-old. They proceeded to ransack the house. They didn’t do anything with the kids, but they did have her walking them through the rooms trying to find stuff to take,” he added.

A concerned neighbor observed the unfolding situation and promptly called 911.

According to Diaz, responding officers arrived at the scene within four minutes.

Upon their arrival, they confronted two suspects inside the home and noticed the woman who was bound with zip ties.

While officers were detaining 38-year-old Michael Perez, the second suspect, Raymond Perez, emerged from a back room and opened fire.

Officer S. Durfee was shot in the leg but managed to return fire despite his injury. He survived the shooting and has recently begun walking again as he recovers at home.

To support his family during this time, his colleagues have raised $30,000.

Raymond Perez, 35, who fled the scene after the shooting, was apprehended about a block away. Investigators later identified 18-year-old Brian A. Garcia Chavez as the getaway driver.

He was found several hours later and taken into custody by SWAT.

Due to the discharge of an officer’s weapon during the incident, Houston Police Department (HPD) policy mandated the release of the bodycam footage.

The footage includes clips from three officers’ body-worn cameras, showcasing the perspectives of the officers who entered the home and the one who apprehended the shooter.

The video shows the chaotic scene inside the house, including a woman on her knees with her hands tied behind her back as officers entered.

While Officer Durfee assisted the woman, Raymond Perez emerged from a back room and fired at him, striking Durfee. The woman crawled away to reach her children as Durfee returned fire while seeking cover.

“It’s hard to watch. Obviously, when you know these folks and realize what is going on,” said Ray Hunt, executive director of the Houston Police Officers Union.

He emphasized that officers must make split-second decisions daily in high-pressure situations.

Raymond Perez has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Michael Perez and Garcia Chavez are both charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Surveillance video obtained by KHOU 11 captured a white car in front of the victim’s home, along with the sound of a woman screaming as a man exited the vehicle and rushed inside the house.

As the investigation continues, local law enforcement emphasizes the dangers faced by officers in the line of duty and the critical need for community support in addressing crime and ensuring safety in neighborhoods.
