In a brief interview with TMZ at an airport, Gibson criticized Harris, calling her track record “appalling” and characterizing her intelligence as “the IQ of a fence post.”

When approached by a TMZ reporter, Gibson was asked about his voting intentions.

Though he did not explicitly confirm support for Trump, his response was pointed. “The president is being voted on in days. What’s your thoughts?” the reporter asked. Gibson replied, “Oh man. That’s a big question. I don’t think it’s gonna surprise anyone who I vote for.” After the reporter responded with, “So, I’m gonna guess Trump,” Gibson shot back, “That’s a pretty good guess.”

The conversation shifted to what a potential second Trump term might entail, prompting Gibson to express doubts about Harris’s potential as president. “I know what it would be like if we let her in,” Gibson remarked. “Miserable track record. Appalling track record. No policies to speak of. And she’s got the IQ of a fence post.”

Gibson’s political stance has drawn attention alongside recent statements from his Hacksaw Ridge collaborator, actor Andrew Garfield, who publicly commented on Gibson’s personal growth since his controversial 2006 DUI arrest.

At the time, Gibson faced significant backlash for anti-Jewish comments he made during the incident. Reflecting on working with Gibson, Garfield shared, “I learned a lot, actually. I learned that people can heal. I learned that people can change, that people can get help. I learned that everyone deserves respect.”

Garfield praised Gibson’s journey toward what he called “beautiful healing,” emphasizing that Gibson deserves respect for his contributions as a filmmaker.

“He’s done a lot of beautiful healing with himself,” Garfield continued. “And thank God. Because he’s an amazing filmmaker, and I think he deserves to make films. He deserves to tell stories, because he has a very, very big, compassionate heart. He’s a real empathetic guy.”

Actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Jodie Foster have also spoken in Gibson’s defense over the years, reflecting Hollywood’s mixed views on Gibson following his past controversies.

Gibson, known for his critically acclaimed work, is set to return to directing in 2025 with a new thriller, Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg.
