Comedian Jim Gaffigan delivered a scathing performance targeting Kamala Harris and fellow Democrats during the Al Smith Dinner on Thursday night.

His jokes, aimed at Harris’s absence from the event, have since gone viral, with some commentators dubbing his remarks the “murder of an entire political party.”

The Al Smith Dinner, a longstanding Catholic charity event held in Manhattan, was attended by a range of political figures, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and former President Donald Trump.

Harris made headlines by becoming the first presidential candidate in 40 years to skip the event.

As Gaffigan emceed the charity dinner, he raised questions about Harris’s absence. “You know, this event has been referred to as the Catholic Met Gala. Twenty-two percent of Americans identify as Catholic. Catholics will be a key demographic in every battleground state. I’m sorry, why is Vice President Harris not here?” he asked, prompting laughter from the audience.

The comedian took further jabs at Harris, noting her participation in various media appearances instead of the dinner, including her appearance on the sex-focused podcast “Call Her Daddy.” He remarked, “I mean, consider this, this is a room full of Catholics and Jews in New York City. This is a layup for the Democratic nominee.”

Gaffigan continued, “In her defense, I mean she did find time to appear on The View, Howard Stern, Colbert, and the longtime staple of campaigning, the Call Her Daddy podcast. You know what I think it is? I think she doesn’t like me. Chuck, do I have bad breath?”

In another pointed joke, Gaffigan addressed the Democratic Party’s strategy regarding Joe Biden, suggesting that the party may have opted to replace him with Harris due to fears of a Trump victory. “The Democrats have been telling us Trump’s reelection is a threat to democracy. In fact, they were so concerned of this threat, they staged a coup, ousted their democratically elected incumbent and installed Kamala Harris,” he said.

He added humorously, “In other words, all her dreams have come true. It really makes me consider the power of prayer, right Cardinal? Sometimes prayers take three-and-a-half years and a George Clooney op-ed.”

Clips of Gaffigan’s performance quickly circulated on social media, with many users highlighting the truth behind his jokes.

One user tweeted, “Hello 911, I’d like to report the murder of an entire political party.”

Another commented, “Breaking: Jim Gaffigan just lost all of his future comedy specials on Netflix,” while another added, “Jim Gaffigan just called out the coup against Biden, Schumer crapped his pants, Trump smiled, and now we know why Kamala didn’t show up!”

The response to Gaffigan’s remarks indicates a significant resonance with his audience, particularly in the context of ongoing political tensions.

Many viewers noted the brutal nature of his takedowns, underscoring the fact that they reflect broader sentiments among some voters. “BRUTAL takedown made worse by the fact that what he’s saying is true,” one user stated.

As the 2024 election approaches, the Al Smith Dinner continues to serve as a platform for political figures to engage in humor and criticism, with Gaffigan’s performance adding to the event’s legacy of light-hearted political commentary.
