During a recent town hall hosted by NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo, former President Donald Trump made a surprise call, sparking laughter as he directed a question to Ohio Senator JD Vance.

JD Vance introduces former President Donald J. Trump at a rally in Atlanta on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2024.

The unscripted moment provided a glimpse into Trump’s personality, as well as Vance’s respect for Trump’s ability to connect with everyday Americans.

The segment began with Cuomo addressing Vance. “Senator, you’re going to want to sit down for this one,” Cuomo said with a grin, “Oh no, not unlike Beetlejuice, if you invoke the former president’s name too many times in a row, he’s going to want to weigh in on what is being said. We have a call right now from former President Donald John Trump. He wants to weigh in. Mr. President, I know there’s a little bit of a delay. Can you hear us? And what is your question for the Senator?”

Trump responded, “Well, I can hear you, Chris, and I do have a question, and I think it will be quite an interesting one. The answer should be easy. How brilliant is Donald J. Trump?”

The room broke into laughter, with Cuomo adding, “Take your time.”

Responding, Vance showed his admiration for Trump’s relatability. “Well, first of all, sir, this is supposed to be undecided voters. I would hope that I have your vote of all people,” Vance joked, prompting more laughter. “But here’s the thing about President Trump that, if you’ll forgive me, sir, often people don’t see. And of course, I’ve got my beautiful wife here in the front row. One of my favorite moments with President Trump happened at an event near our home in Cincinnati a few months ago.”

Vance then shared an interaction that demonstrated Trump’s unique ability to connect with others. “Of course, you know, my wife was a little bit nervous to really talk to the President of the United States, and he asked her, ‘What do you think about your husband being in public service?’ And she gave, if you know my wife, a very diplomatic answer, ‘Sir, he really cares about the people of Ohio. He’s thrilled to be able to serve them, and I’m happy to support him however I can.’”

Trump, Vance recounted, “chuckled and goes, ‘Yeah, my wife hates it, too.’” Vance described how that small comment “immediately broke the barrier,” turning Trump from a former president into “just a person talking to my wife.”

“That ability to relate to anybody in any environment, I think that’s the true brilliance of Donald J. Trump,” Vance concluded.

The lighthearted exchange highlighted the mutual respect between Trump and Vance, as well as Trump’s well-known ability to connect with his supporters in an authentic way.
