Conservative commentator Scott Jennings took aim at prominent liberals on Monday for what he described as a sudden and hypocritical shift in their tone toward President-elect Donald Trump.

His remarks followed news of Trump’s recent meeting with MSNBC co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough, as well as his cordial summit with President Joe Biden at the White House last week.

Appearing on CNN NewsNight, Jennings expressed astonishment at what he called an about-face by liberals who had spent years portraying Trump as a “fascist” and “threat to democracy.”

“I’m amazed. I did not expect Hitler to get so many meeting requests, first from Joe Biden, now from Mika and Joe,” Jennings said with a wry smile. “It’s amazing that literal Hitler is getting all these meeting requests.”

Jennings argued that these recent interactions prove that the harsh rhetoric from Democrats and liberal media figures was disingenuous. “What it tells me, professor,” Jennings said to fellow panelist Jeff Jarvis, “is that all the rhetoric that came from the left, from the Democrats, from the White House, from Kamala Harris and everyone else before the election—the fascism, the Hitler, the Nazi rally—it was all a bunch of BS. They didn’t mean any of it.”

He added, “If I were in the Democrat sort-of rabble’s shoes, I would be looking at all my leaders and going, ‘Did you just BS me for an entire six weeks before the election?’”

The criticism comes after MSNBC Morning Joe co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough revealed that they had met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago last week.

This marked their first face-to-face interaction with Trump in seven years, following the deterioration of their relationship early in Trump’s presidency.

The co-hosts said the meeting was an effort to “restart communications” and provide new insights to their audience, while also pushing back against criticism from both conservatives and liberals.

“Joe and I realized it’s time to do something different, and that starts with not only talking about Donald Trump, but also talking with him,” Brzezinski said. Scarborough added, “Don’t be mistaken. We’re not here to defend or normalize Donald Trump. We’re here to report on him and to hopefully provide you insights that are going to better equip all of us in understanding these deeply unsettling times.”

Fellow panelist Jeff Jarvis countered Jennings’ remarks, insisting that Trump is indeed a fascist and accusing those who soften their stance toward him of abandoning their responsibility to hold him accountable.

“I just reread Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism, and I cannot tell you how relevant it is to today. What has gone on in totalitarian regimes before is what is happening in this country right now. It is fascism,” Jarvis said. “His generals called him fascist. Joe Scarborough called him fascist.”

Jarvis criticized journalists and public figures who engage with Trump without addressing what he sees as his authoritarian tendencies. “And now the fascist is in charge, and it is journalism’s job to cover it that way, not to back off and say, ‘Okay, well that’s it, we lost. Let the fascism happen.’”

Democratic strategist Julie Roginsky offered a different critique, suggesting that some liberals have prioritized personal career gains over holding Trump accountable. “It says a lot more actually, Scott, about them than it does about their beliefs, because they believe it, they just don’t care because they believe in their own careers more,” Roginsky said. “And that’s the part that’s disgusting to me.”

The interactions between Trump, Biden, and the Morning Joe hosts have sparked intense debate about sincerity and accountability in political rhetoric.

Megyn Kelly called out the morning Morning Joe hosts on her podcast as well.

As Trump prepares to assume the presidency once again, the divide among liberals regarding how to approach him highlights ongoing tensions within the media and Democratic Party.
