President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he has secured an agreement from Mexico’s new president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, to halt migration through Mexico and into the United States.

Claudia Sheinbaum takes the oath of president at the Mexican Congress as her inauguration is set to begin on Oct. 1, 2024.

Trump shared the news in a post on Truth Social, stating, “Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.”

He continued, “She has agreed to stop migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.”

Trump, who is set to take office on January 20, emphasized that he and Sheinbaum Pardo also discussed the flow of illegal drugs from Mexico into the U.S. during their “very productive conversation.”

He stated, “We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs.”

Sheinbaum Pardo, 62, who took office as Mexico’s first female president in October 2024, confirmed the conversation on social media.

In a post on X, she wrote, “I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump. We discussed Mexico’s strategy on the migration phenomenon and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico.”

Sheinbaum Pardo also addressed efforts to curb fentanyl consumption, stating, “We also discussed strengthening collaboration on security issues within the framework of our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl.”

Earlier this week, Trump had announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican imports as part of his strategy to force Mexico to curb illegal immigration and drug smuggling.

He also stated that China and Canada would face tariffs of 10% and 25%, respectively, under the executive order.

Trump indicated in a separate post on Truth Social that Sheinbaum Pardo’s commitment to halting migration would take effect immediately.

He wrote, “Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately.” He continued, “THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!”

The president-elect has previously vowed to carry out the largest deportation effort in U.S. history, set to begin when he takes office.

He confirmed earlier this month that he would declare a “national emergency” and use “military assets” to aid in the deportation of illegal migrants.

Trump is also expected to reinstate several measures aimed at curbing illegal border crossings, including the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required asylum seekers to wait for their immigration hearings in Mexico during Trump’s first term.

Additionally, Trump announced plans for a large-scale U.S. advertising campaign aimed at educating the public on the dangers of fentanyl.

He stated, “Millions of lives being so needlessly destroyed” by the illicit drug, and promised that, “By the time the campaign is over, everyone will know how really bad the horror of this drug is.”

Trump’s continued focus on border security and drug trafficking underscores his commitment to addressing what he has called a national emergency and highlights the actions he intends to take once he is inaugurated in January.
