Five family members, including three children, were discovered dead inside a home in West Valley City, Utah, on Tuesday.
A 17-year-old boy, also a family member, was found in the garage with a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital, according to local authorities.
The deceased include two adults, an 11-year-old boy, and two girls aged 9 and 2, said Roxeanne Vainuku, a spokesperson for the West Valley City Police Department.

The tragic discovery was made at a residence in West Valley City, located approximately nine miles southwest of Salt Lake City. Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“It’s absolutely horrific,” Vainuku said during a news conference Tuesday night. “This is something that certainly will weigh heavily on investigators in this case.”
Authorities stated that they do not believe there is an active suspect on the loose and confirmed that the incident was contained to the home. “This was something that was isolated to this home,” Vainuku explained.
The 17-year-old survivor is receiving medical care, but communication with him has been challenging due to his injuries, police said. “Because the 17-year-old is injured and he’s in the hospital, there are some challenges in communicating with him and finding out more information,” Vainuku added.
According to investigators, a relative of the family first contacted police on Monday after being unable to reach the 38-year-old woman who lived in the home.
Officers conducted a welfare check but received no response from inside the residence.
Concern grew when the woman failed to report to work on Tuesday.
The same relative went back to the house that afternoon and discovered the injured teen in the garage.
Police were called to the scene and found the five deceased family members inside the home.
Authorities are currently investigating the home and speaking with neighbors in an effort to piece together what happened.
Police are also reviewing potential evidence from doorbell cameras and other security footage in the area.
All six individuals were members of the same family and lived in the residence, according to local news outlet KUTV.
The names of the victims have not yet been released as authorities work to notify extended family members and gather additional information.
Police have not confirmed the exact cause of death for the five family members or the events leading up to the tragedy.
Investigators have also not disclosed whether the injuries to the 17-year-old are self-inflicted or if they believe he may have more information about what transpired.
This case is the latest in a string of incidents involving violence within families, sparking renewed attention on mental health and safety concerns.
