The scrutiny comes after Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) resurfaced a November 2023 tweet in which Cheney dismissed him as a “nutball conspiracy theorist” for questioning federal agencies’ role in the Capitol events.

The controversy was reignited following the release of a long-awaited January 6 report by DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz on Thursday.

The report disclosed that 26 undercover operatives were embedded in the crowd during the Capitol protest.
According to the report, four of these operatives entered the Capitol building itself, while 13 others breached restricted areas.
While the findings confirm federal presence among the protesters, many believe the numbers are underreported.
Liz, we’ve seen footage like that a million times.
You made sure we saw that—and nothing else.
It’s the other stuff—what you deliberately hid from us—that we find so upsetting.
Nice try.
P.S. How many of these guys are feds? (As if you’d ever tell us). https://t.co/FryO0VdLdP

Critics, including outlets like The Gateway Pundit, argue that the report likely excludes numerous covert agents or “cutouts” operating in the larger crowd, raising concerns about transparency in the investigation.

These developments directly challenge prior claims that federal agencies, including the FBI, were not involved in January 6.
Senator Lee, a staunch critic of the official narrative, highlighted the significance of the report on social media, revisiting Cheney’s previous dismissal of his concerns.
“Liz Cheney called me a ‘nutball conspiracy theorist’ for asking questions about FBI’s involvement on January 6th. The DOJ Inspector General’s report confirmed that I had good reasons to ask these questions, which Christopher Wray repeatedly dodged,” Lee tweeted Thursday night, referencing his earlier calls for accountability from FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Cheney, a prominent member of the House Select Committee investigating January 6, has been accused of selectively presenting evidence during the hearings.
Critics allege that she intentionally suppressed key information, including reports that then-President Donald Trump authorized the National Guard to be on standby during the Capitol protest.
Her actions have been widely seen as an attempt to build a case against Trump, with some accusing her of using the committee to advance partisan goals.
During her tenure on the committee, Cheney frequently dismissed concerns raised by conservatives about federal involvement in the events of January 6.
Her tweet targeting Senator Lee in 2023 typified this approach, as she labeled him a conspiracy theorist for questioning the FBI’s activities.
Now, with the Inspector General’s report lending credibility to Lee’s inquiries, Cheney’s dismissal of such concerns appears increasingly untenable.
The findings have also cast doubt on the broader integrity of the January 6 investigation.
The report’s acknowledgment of undercover operatives in the crowd underscores the need for a deeper examination of federal agencies’ roles during the Capitol unrest.
Conservative voices have long called for transparency, arguing that the involvement of operatives raises questions about the nature of the protest and the subsequent legal actions against participants.
Senator Lee’s tweet celebrating the vindication of his concerns reflects the broader sentiment among many conservatives who have long questioned the official narrative surrounding January 6.
The release of the Inspector General’s report marks a significant moment in the ongoing effort to uncover the full scope of events on January 6.
With federal involvement now confirmed, calls for greater accountability and transparency in the investigation are likely to grow, even as figures like Cheney face mounting criticism for their role in shaping the initial narrative.
