Political analyst Mark Halperin shared his perspective on Kamala Harris’s potential political trajectory during an appearance on The Megyn Kelly Show on Tuesday.
According to Halperin, Harris faces significant challenges whether she aims for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 or considers a run for California governor.
The discussion comes as Harris’s aides and allies remain divided over her future political ambitions. Some advocate for a gubernatorial campaign in California, while others suggest Harris should focus on securing the Democratic presidential nomination.

CNN has reported that the decision hinges on internal assessments of her chances in either race.
Halperin argued that Harris would likely have a better shot at becoming governor of California than winning the Democratic nomination, but he cautioned that even the gubernatorial path would not be an easy one.
“I find it hard to believe that she could build support. The stories — it’s just, it’s so disappointing to see our colleagues, just as they did during the four years of the Biden administration, failing to cover the truth right before our eyes,” Halperin said. “Is her poor performance the only reason she didn’t win? No, but it’s right up there … I think both [President] Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have escaped a lot of the blame that falls to them, and that’s not just my view, but the view of a lot of Democrats — donors and members of Congress, etc.”
Halperin emphasized Harris’s leadership challenges, stating that her difficulty in making tough decisions under pressure could hinder her chances in either role.
“I think her chance[s] of being governor of California are greater than being the Democratic nominee, but I don’t think they’re as great as people say, because again, her challenge is her weakness. She does not like to make difficult choices under pressure, and that is the job description for running for governor of California, being governor of California, running for president, being president,” he explained.
Halperin also questioned whether Harris truly has the desire to serve as California’s governor.
“I think she might try, but I think she’d be surprised at how tough it is. And finally, I’ll say I’m not sure she wants to be governor of California. It’s not a great job right now, and so why she’d run and risk losing, and then if she did win, get the job — I’m not really sure,” he added.
Reflecting on Harris’s past presidential campaigns, Halperin pointed out that her performance has consistently raised doubts about her viability as a future candidate.

“She’s now run twice and done poorly both times, and I think it’s incumbent upon the media and Democrats — have an honest and fair discussion about whether this is the right role for her, because she’s 0 for 2 in pretty dramatic fashion,” Halperin said.
Harris’s political future remains a topic of significant debate, both within Democratic circles and in the media.
As 2028 approaches, questions about her strategy and potential paths forward will likely continue to dominate discussions about the party’s leadership and direction.
