Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) engaged in a fiery confrontation with Alex Lawson, executive director of Strengthen Social Security, on Tuesday at the Capitol.

The exchange centered on Social Security, with Greene accusing Lawson of playing partisan politics and dismissing his questioning as a political attack.

The encounter occurred in the halls of Congress following a meeting of the House Subcommittee on Government Efficiency, which Greene chairs.

Lawson approached Greene, urging her to commit to protecting Social Security and Medicare from cuts in future legislative discussions.

The incident was captured on video and has since gone viral.

“You are one controversial ad funded by Democrats who donate to Democrats,” Greene retorted as Lawson attempted to engage her. “You’re out there asking bullshit questions.”

Lawson presented Greene with campaign mailers, including one from former President Donald Trump, outlining his pledge to protect Social Security.

However, Greene dismissed the materials, accusing Lawson of pushing a partisan agenda. “We all campaigned on protecting your Social Security. You can’t lie about it,” Greene said before tossing the mailer to the floor. “This is your political agenda. We don’t care.”

As Lawson pressed on, asking Greene to affirm Trump’s commitment to Social Security, the congresswoman remained defiant. “I don’t need to take a pledge because we’ve already done that all year long,”

Greene responded. “And guess what? The sad story for you is the American people elected Trump, his agenda, and Republicans to lead the country because you guys suck so bad.”

Lawson later described the interaction in a statement to Newsweek. “When I tried to hand Representative Greene Donald Trump’s mailer that he sent to millions of households promising not to cut Social Security and Medicare, she refused to affirm she would keep his promise,” Lawson said.

“Not only did she refuse, she ripped the Trump mailers out of my hands and threw them on the floor in disgust. I think that is a very visual explanation of how the Republicans in Congress view the promises made during the campaign—worthless garbage.”

The clash highlights a growing debate over the future of Social Security. While Trump’s 2024 campaign has pledged to protect the program, he has proposed reforms that include eliminating federal taxes on benefits and funding Social Security through increased oil and gas drilling.

Critics argue that while such measures could boost retirees’ incomes, they may also hasten the program’s insolvency, potentially leading to benefit cuts as early as 2031.

For Republicans, Trump’s popularity among voters creates pressure to align with his positions, even as analysts warn of the potential fiscal consequences of some proposals.

The incident adds to Greene’s reputation as a polarizing figure in Congress, known for her confrontational style and willingness to challenge critics head-on.

As the debate over Social Security continues, her clash with Lawson is likely to fuel further discussion on the role of campaign promises and the accountability of lawmakers to uphold them.
