Sen. Bernie Sanders’ “Fighting Oligarchy” tour has come under scrutiny after featuring a transgender singer who performed a song criticized for its explicit and anti-Christian lyrics.

The performance, which took place during Sanders’ event in Kenosha, Wisconsin, has drawn backlash from conservatives and religious groups.

The controversy erupted after Laura Jane Grace, a transgender musician and lead singer of the punk rock band Against Me!, performed a song titled Your God (God’s D—) at the event.

The lyrics mock Christianity, referencing Easter Sunday and Jesus in a manner described by critics as offensive and obscene.

Following the performance, Sanders publicly thanked Grace, prompting further outrage online.

Conservative commentator Robby Starbuck was among those who condemned the event, calling the song “pure evil” and highlighting its anti-Christian nature.

“The song specifically attacks Christianity with mentions of Easter and God’s son,” Starbuck wrote in a post on X.

Sanders’ tour has focused on key battleground states such as Wisconsin and Michigan, areas where the 2024 election proved competitive for Democrats.

The senator, a self-described Democratic socialist, has used the tour to criticize President Donald Trump and his administration, framing his argument around what he calls the country’s growing “oligarchic society.”

Video clips of Grace’s performance, including those shared on the musician’s Instagram page, circulated widely on social media over the weekend.

Critics took particular issue with Sanders’ decision to acknowledge and thank Grace after the performance.

“Wow. AFTER the anti-Christian ‘performance’ at his event, @BernieSanders thanked the trans singer that performed this hateful, evil song,” Starbuck posted on X.

“If he attempts to apologize, just know his first instinct was to thank the singer after he sang it.”

Starbuck further characterized the moment as indicative of the current state of the Democratic Party, adding, “This is who the Democrats are now. Pure evil.

Grace, who came out as transgender in 2012 during an interview with Rolling Stone, gained prominence in the early 2000s as the frontwoman of Against Me!.

The musician has been outspoken on LGBTQ+ issues and frequently incorporates political themes into performances.

Meanwhile, Sanders has remained focused on his political message, delivering a response to President Trump’s address to Congress on March 4.

In his remarks, Sanders accused the administration of prioritizing wealthy elites over working Americans.

“The Trump administration is not hiding it,” Sanders said in a livestreamed response.

“The Trump administration is a government of the billionaire class by the billionaire class, and for the billionaire class. Notwithstanding some of their rhetoric, this is a government that could care less about ordinary Americans and the working families of our country. My friends, we are no longer moving toward oligarchy. We are living in an oligarchic society.”

While Sanders has long positioned himself as a champion of the working class, the backlash over Grace’s performance has sparked debate over the broader cultural and ideological battles shaping American politics.
